The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra (SJMO) was founded in 1990 with an appropriation from the U.S. Congress in recognition of the importance of jazz in American cultural and its status as a National Treasure. The orchestra, led by Artistic and Musical Director, David N. Baker, serves as the orchestra-in-residence at the National Museum of American

History, Division of Cultural History. The orchestra re-creates big band jazz as its composers and

arrangers intended it to be played, stripping away intervening changes and alterations. The SJMO has rediscovered old classics, premiered new discoveries, and more recently has begun premiering new works. Composed of musicians drawn from across the United States, the orchestra plays authentic and compelling performances of the music of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, and many other masters. MISSION: To explore, present, promote, and perpetuate the historical legacy of jazz. We enrich the public's understanding of the character and importance of this unique American treasure by presenting significant jazz masterworks in engaging musical performances, and stimulating educational activities that are based on scholarship and research.

The concert will star Sharón Clark as Ella Fitzgerald. A Washington, D.C. standout, Ms. Clark

has brought festival and concert audiences to their feet across the U.S. and Europe. Her New York run drew raves from the NY Times and the Wall Street Journal, and she won New York's Bistro Award for Best Vocalist. Ms. Clark has made multiple international tours in recent years, making her debut in Israel and returning to Russia, where she has developed a major following. Her most recent release, "Do it Again - My Tribute to Shirley Horn," is on its third printing, and she grabs top honors wherever she goes. Ms. Clark won the Gold Medal and $10,000 top prize at the Savannah Music Festival's American Traditions Competition. She then took first place in the Billie Holiday Vocal Competition, which offers a $2,500 prize along with a featured appearance with the Baltimore Symphony. Ms. Clark appears regularly in DC at Blues Alley and Loews Madison Hotel. A featured soloist with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, the Richmond Symphony, and the Baltimore Symphony, Clark has headlined the Duke Ellington Jazz Festival, the Cape May Jazz Festival and the Savannah Music Festival. Both the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and The Ludacris Foundation chose Ms. Clark to perform for their separate tributes to Quincy Jones.

Created "in furtherance of the musical, literary, artistic and dramatic benefit and enjoyment of the citizens of Chambersburg forever", The Gilmore-Hoerner Endowment is a trust established by William Stenger Hoerner (1867-1935) and his wife, Gail Gilmore-Hoerner (1870-1916). A graduate of Fort Loudon Schools and Franklin & Marshall College, William became a successful trial lawyer. A graduate of Wilson College, Gail was a member of a Chambersburg family that had been prominent in town affairs for several generations. The couple's shared love of the arts and their concern for their community led to the establishment of the endowment. Since 1967, the Gilmore-Hoerner Endowment has sponsored over 50 programs including trips to cultural events, workshops, and performances. Under terms specified by Mr. Hoerner in his will, the Endowment provides artistic and cultural opportunities for the community at remarkably low prices to enable greater participation for all ages, from senior citizens to families with children. While in the past, the Endowment partnered with local non-profits in bringing performances to local stages as well as providing small grants to local arts organizations to enrich their programs and outreach, the Endowment now uses its resources to bring higher-ticket programming to the community while retaining lower ticket prices.
