Orchid Show and More Set for The Ware Center's First Friday, 10/4

Six events for the public are scheduled for the Ware Center this coming First Friday - there's something for everyone, all ages. All but the film ARE FREE.

The Art of the Orchid Flower Show

Features Prize Winning Orchids, Workshops, Art Work and Flowers for Sale

Every other year, the Ware Center presents an October Flower Show. This year's show is produced by the Susquehanna Orchid Society and coordinated by Denise Conklin. This is a huge exhibition of a wide variety of orchids in bloom. The show also includes orchid-themed artwork and workshops.

The flowers will be judged on Friday, and winners will be announced that evening. New this year is the People's Choice Award where the public picks their favorite. First place ribbons will be awarded in a variety of categories: cattleya, dendrobium, vanda, encyclia, miltonia, and oncidum.

The show will include three top orchid growers R&B Orchids (Massachusetts), Waldorf (a third generation orchid growing family) (New Jersey) and Little Brook Orchids from Lancaster. Town and Country master gardens and Lancaster Nature Conservancy will provide information on how to grow your own orchids. This show also runs through Art Walk Weekend: Saturday, 10 AM - 5 PM and Sunday, Noon - 4 PM. FREE.

Garden Sculptures & DRAWINGS FROM the imaginative mind of Jeff George

Jeff George is a designer, illustrator, sculptor, and art director. For this show, he takes three-dimensional ideas for sculptures and flattens them down to two-dimensional works of art. His highly-finished, detailed work shows parts, pieces and ideas for sculptures he thinks should be built with enough technical thought to include proposed size, construction material and means of assemblage. The end result is incredible finished watercolor and ink paintings. He also realizes several of those designs into 3 dimensional sculptures including one gigantic wooden sculpture-tower created specifically to accompany "The Art of the Orchid" Show. This exhibit runs Art Walk Weekend and through October 27th. FREE.

Honest, thought-provoking lyrics & simple poignant melodies characterize WXPN Favorite Matt Wheeler-- Appearing Live in Lyet Lobby from 6 - 8 PM

Matt Wheeler is a Lancaster-based acoustic folk singer and guitarist. Matt's emerged "with a brand of acoustic folk-rock that reflects faith, love, and what it means to be human. Drawing influences from the folk/singer-songwriter tradition such as James Taylor and Iron & Wine, Matt's musical poetry can range from lilting and sweet to haunting and driving." (WXPN) He recently released his first full-length album, "Strings & Wires", which will be available on-site.FREE. Enjoy a FREE cup of coffee while you listen.

Academy Award-winner Bill Couturié's "Letters to Jackie"

Commemorates the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Within three days of Kennedy's November 22, 1963 death, 45,000 letters of condolence had arrived at the White House. Seven weeks later that number had surpassed 800,000, expressing grief, shock, outrage and sympathy for the First Lady and her young children.

"I'll never forget where I was when JFK was killed. No one will. It cast a dark shadow over America. The world, really. Afterwards, the American people poured out their hearts to Jackie. The strength and wisdom of the nation, coming out of profound tragedy, rings clear in these letters. As soon as I read them, I knew I had to make a movie around them and the time they so eloquently evoke," said filmmaker Bill Couturié.

"Jackie" features 20 letters culled from the hundreds of thousands, read by some of Hollywood's foremost actors, including: Jessica Chastain, Chris Cooper, Viola Davis, Zooey Deschanel, Kirsten Dunst, Anne Hathaway, Allison Janney, John Krasinski, Melissa Leo, Laura Linney, Frances McDormand, Mark Ruffalo, Octavia Spencer, Channing Tatum, Betty White and Michelle Williams. Archival film footage from the era, including never-before-seen Kennedy home movies, provides context for film's featured letter-writers.
