On Friday June 10, R.Evolución Latina and the Pan American International High School in Queens came together to make a difference.
Recently, R.Evolución Latina (RL) had the opportunity to bring together students from several schools for an exclusive screening of the film "Home." "Home" is a unique ?lm that approaches the current debate about climate change from a whole new angle, giving the viewer the opportunity to see how our earth is changing. Going well beyond the scientific reports, charts and graphs, this ?lm is an inspiration that speaks to our hearts and touches our souls. Students from the Pan American International High School (PAIHS) in Elmhurst were so affected by the film, that they were inspired to go beyond in their own community.
PAIHS teachers Juan Velez and Steve Espaillat joined RL Education Department Coordinator Jose Restrepo to create and organize this unique event. Over 100 students participated alongside RL volunteers, Broadway artists, and PAIHS staff members. The cleanup event began at 9:30am, when participants were split into four groups to tackle the streets and parks surrounding the school in Elmhurst (including Linden Park, Roosevelt Avenue, Junction Boulevard to 111th Street, Corona Avenue, and the Pedestrian Bridge on 94th Street and 45th Avenue). Trash bags, brooms, gloves, and other cleaning supplies were donated by NBA Cares and the NYC Sanitation Department, United Healthcare provided water to keep participants hydrated throughout the day, and t-shirts were donated by SD Printing & Design Inc. Over 100 bags were filled with trash as local vendors and community members cheered the students on and thanked the volunteers as they witnessed their streets being transformed and a community coming together.
The event finished in Corona Golf Park where participants were greeted by Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras who celebrated and congratulated their efforts to make a difference in their community. R.Evolución Latina's artists performed, lunch was provided, and a panel discussion addressed the necessity of remaining aware and educated about the effects our actions have on the planet.
