Kitchen Theatre Company Wins ICWP 50/50 Applause Award
Kitchen Theatre Company has been honored with the International Centre for Women Playwrights 50/50 Applause Award, given to theaters that produced fifty percent or more plays by women playwrights in their 2015/2016 season. The Kitchen joins 107 theatres in 10 countries and 5 continents in winning this award.
The mission of the International Centre for Women Playwrights is to promote and support women dramatists around the world. ICWP began in 1988 in Buffalo, New York, and created the 50/50 Applause Award in 2012 to increase awareness and congratulate theatres that produce plays by female playwrights.
Kitchen Theatre Company's 2015/2016 season included The Mountaintop by Katori Hall, I and You by Lauren Gunderson, The Soup Comes Last by Artistic Director Rachel Lampert, and Paloma by Anne García-Romero. This season's roster includes three plays by women, including the world premiere of Wendy Dann's Birds of East Africa. This will bring the total number of plays by women playwrights produced at the Kitchen to 60 during Lampert's tenure.
"I am so pleased that Kitchen Theatre Company has been recognized in this way," says Artistic Director Rachel Lampert. "The Kitchen has long promoted the work of women playwrights, directors, and designers. For the past three seasons our directors have all been women. The choices a theater makes must reflect the entire community, so I am glad that Kitchen Theatre Company has been a leader in this area."
