About this camp
YMCA Camp Wapsie is a traditional overnight and day camp operated by the YMCA of the Cedar Rapids Metro Area, set on scenic land near Coggon, Iowa, about 30 miles north of Cedar Rapids. Week-long overnight sessions are grouped as The Village for 1st-3rd graders, Cabin Campers for 4th-10th graders and Ranger for 8th-10th graders, with Adventure Trips for 6th-12th graders that include rock climbing at Devil's Lake, whitewater rafting in Wisconsin, backpacking the Yellow River and a northern Minnesota expedition. Activities include swimming, canoeing, archery, riflery, climbing and a zip line, hiking, nature study, arts and crafts, guitars, drama and team sports, and each Thursday is a themed Special Day. Leadership-in-Training and Counselor-in-Training programs prepare older teens for staff roles, and financial assistance plus candy-sale and can-drive fundraising help families offset fees.
Overnight divisions: The Village (1st-3rd grade), Cabin Campers (4th-10th grade) and Ranger (8th-10th grade). Adventure Trips for 6th-12th grade include Devil's Lake climbing, an eastern Iowa adventure, Wisconsin whitewater rafting, backpacking the Yellow River and a northern Minnesota expedition. Leadership-in-Training (entering 10th-11th grade) and Counselor-in-Training (entering 11th-12th grade) programs are also offered.
