Shepley Metcalf Coming to Metropolitan Room, 11/1

Vocalist Shepley Metcalf, critically lauded by the Boston Globe as a "superb cabaret/jazz singer," is celebrating the release of her third recording, "Don't Bother to Knock," with a series of shows on the east coast this Fall. New Yorkers can catch Metcalf at the Metropolitan Room for one show on November 1st at 7pm, singing music from the CD along with some other lesser-known gems from the Great American Songbook. "Don't Bother to Knock" is a dream project for Metcalf: a collection of songs from the 1930's to 50's with high charm factor that have been rarely recorded since their debut. Her love of song sleuthing means months and sometimes years of searching out and listening to unique music defined by humor, lovely melodies and clever lyrics. This singularity is a modus operandi that has served Metcalf well on her previous recordings and many performances, where fans can always count on hearing a carefully selected set no one else is performing on any bandstand, anywhere. For "Don't Bother to Knock" she found inspiration in artists of yore like Annette Hanshaw, Mildred Bailey and Anita O'Day and writers including Johnny Burke (with Harold Spina, "You're Not the Only Oyster in the Stew), Dorothy Fields (with Burton Lane, "Have Feet, Will Dance") and Richard Whiting (with George Marion Jr., "My Future Just Passed").

Shepley Metcalf has called Cambridge, MA home for decades. She and Ron Roy have been collaborating since meeting at The Tuscany Project, a 10-day intensive vocal workshop held in Italy where Roy is a member of the faculty. With the 2010 release of Metcalf's debut CD, "Something Irresistible: Songs of Fran Landesman + Simon Wallace," Roy and Metcalf became the first U.S. musicians to perform and record a new songbook by Landesman, the idiosyncratic London based ex-pat American lyricist who was a kindred spirit to Metcalf. The recording earned a four-star/excellent review from Jazzwise Magazine, the UK's foremost jazz monthly. Metcalf's New York performances of the Landesman show earned her a coveted and favorable New York Times review. Metcalf's second release, "The Songs of Laura Nyro: Live at the Metropolitan Room," was released in 2013.
