BWW Reviews: Marilyn Maye's 'The Best Of Times Is Now' Opens at Feinstein's at Loew's Regency

By:

Even before John Iachetti (Loews Hotels Corporate Director of Entertainment) escorts you to your table at Feinstein's, you are aware of a special excitement in the air. When Marilyn Maye comes into town, the Loews Regency becomes more like a Revival Tent, as the faithful flock to be inspired by the Johnny Carson-dubbed "super singer".

Many of Marilyn's fans have grown up with her, but the room is also filled with new converts. All seem to be Marilyn's friends. They have been captivated by this vocalist from the mid- west who so totally embodies that dramatic swing/pop sound, which never fails to breathe special life into songs you have heard many times before. Her unique ability to be musically exciting and remarkably entertaining is probably why in the 60's & 70's RCA chose Marilyn to record the Pop versions of their just released Original Cast Broadway Show Albums.

Time has been very kind to Marilyn, and in fact has added to her capabilities. You only are aware that it's her "older" voice if you are familiar with her early records. It is rich, strong and as they say "always in the pocket". Her performance last night took the audience through a gamut of emotions which only great music, performed by a great singer is capable of. Marilyn's swing comes down on a beat that you don't expect, but then makes you wonder why you didn't, because it all feels so right and natural. Her ballads have an intensity that goes to your inner core, and as she sings the final note there is no doubt in your mind about the song's message.

I've heard most of Marilyn's extensive repertoire but I must say that this Jerry Herman
tribute is one of her best. As she sang Mr. Herman's (with adjusted pronoun) "He Won't Send Roses" all eyes looked at the bouquet on the piano.....sent by Jerry Herman!

Musical Director/Piano Tedd Firth, Tom Hubbard Bass, Jim Eklof Drums. Marilyn is appearing at Feinstein's At Loews Regency Nov. 1-12.
