Stage and Screen Star Robert Loggia, Known for Mobster Roles, Dies at 85

BroadwayWorld is saddened to report that Robert Loggia, known for his roles in SCARFACE and THE SOPRANOS, died today, December 4, 2015 after a battle with Alzheimer's. He was 85.

Loggia earned an Oscar nomination for 1985's JAGGED EDGE for his portrayal of detective 'Sam Ransom' opposite Glenn Close and Jeff Bridges. He also danced alongside Tom Hanks on the iconic giant piano keyboard in 1988's BIG.

Among his other film credits were SOMEBODY UP THERE LIKES ME, PRIZZI'S HONOR, LOST HIGHWAY, INNOCENT BLOOD, ARMED AND DANGEROUS, the PINK PANTHER movies, S.O.B., THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD, NECESSARY ROUGHNESS, RETURN TO ME, INDEPENDENCE DAY and more.

An all-mediums kind of actor, Loggia made his Broadway debut in 1964 in THE THREE SISTERS, which later transferred to London. He also appeared onstage in WEDDING BAND with Ruby Dee and in the BOOM-BOOM ROOM opposite Madeleine Kahn. He made his stage debut off-Broadway in 1956 in THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM.

The actor was also part of the Golden Age of television and appeared on the live series STUDIO ONE and PLAYHOUSE 90, among others. His many television credits also include appearances on THE ELEVENTH HOUR, BREAKING POINT, COLUMBO, GUNSMOKE, LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, STARSKY AND HUTCH, CHARLIE'S ANGELS, MAGNUM, P.I., QUINCY, HAWAII FIVE-0, FRASIER, MONK and more.
