Deadline.com reports that NBC has just bought an hourlong romantic comedy based on the classic tale of Cyrano De Bergerac by Edmond Rostand. The project comes from Michael Oates Palmer, who will also write the script, Prospect Park TV and Universal TV.

The network has ordered a script commitment for the currently titled "Cyrano", which will follow a modern-day Cyrano de Bergerac as he comes up against the tough world of politics. The lead role is described as "a less-than-attractive but genius campaign strategist who returns to save the floundering gubernatorial campaign of the handsome but inarticulate Mayor whose career he helped launch." The updated version will see the candidate as the "photogenic, charismatic mouthpiece for the strategist’s ideas and rhetoric." Both men will eventually fall for the same woman, a journalist covering the campaign.

The classic play will also make its way to Broadway this fall. Roundabout Theatre Company will present Tony Award winner Douglas Hodge as “Cyrano” in a new Broadway production of Cyrano de Bergerac. Clémence Poésy will make her Broadway debut as “Roxane” and Broadway veteran Patrick Page will play "Comte De Guiche." The production will begin previews on September 14, 2012 and open officially on October 11, 2012 at the American Airlines Theatre on Broadway. This will be a limited engagement through November 25, 2012
