EWonline reports that the Fox reality series SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE may be changing its format for its upcoming season and axing the 'results show' portion of the competition.

According to the report, the show's Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe revealed through his Twitter account that “Fox have [sic] cancelled the results show so I will have to change the format of ‘SYTYCD. At least we have another season at the end of May … Don’t worry ‘SYTYCD’ fans. I’m thrilled we have a new [season]. We’ll do our best to find some great talent starting next week in Atlanta.”

This past season of the reality dance competition has seen it ratings fall sharply from past years, causing speculation that the series would not be returning at all for another sason. The results show typically rated much lower than its performance show counterpart.  According to the Fox web site, the show is scheduled to return in 'Summer 2012'.

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE, recently won three Emmy Awards. The show includes dancers who compete in everything from Hip-Hop, Krumping, and Popping to Salsa, Quickstep and Jive.

As revealed by Emmy-nominated host Cat Deeley, Season Eight champion Melanie Moore was voted America’s Favorite Dancer on August 11th and danced off with the cash prize of $250,000.

In Season Nine, producers will travel across the country in search of dancers who represent the best America has to offer. Those who shine during auditions are given a ticket to Las Vegas for call-backs, where they work with top choreographers to learn and then be judged on multiple styles of dance. During the call-back week, the judges choose the Top 20 dancers who continue in the competition. The Top 20 finalists then perform in their own specialties, free of any judgment or voting, so that America can get to know more about them and their talents before being asked to vote.

In the performance round, the 20 contestants – 10 guys and 10 girls – dance for America’s votes, and each week the six contestants comprising the bottom three couples are given a chance to perform solo routines to encourage viewers to keep them on the show. The judges then decide which dancers stay in the competition and which male and female are eliminated. If a couple is split apart, the two individual dancers who remain become a couple the following week.

Last season, once the series was down to the Top 10 finalists, the dancers switched partners and danced with a returning all-star dancer from a past season. When they got to the Top Six finalists, it was solely up to America to decide who remained in the competition. Following the performance shows, viewers voted for their favorite couples. The live results shows revealed who kept dancing and who went home.

Throughout its eight seasons, SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE has received 22 Primetime Emmy Award nominations and garnered 10 Emmy wins. SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE recently celebrated eight Primetime Emmy Award nominations including two firsts: Outstanding Reality-Competition Series and Outstanding Host for Reality or Reality-Competition Series for Cat Deeley.

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE was created by Simon Fuller and Nigel Lythgoe and comes from 19 Entertainment Ltd. and Dick Clark Productions, Inc. It is executive-produced by Simon Fuller, Nigel Lythgoe and Barry Adelman.
