Dark Star Pictures will release the dramedy WELCOME TO THE MEN'S GROUP, directed by Joseph Culp. It will open in Los Angeles on May 18th at the Laemmle Music Hall Theater, then NY and additional cities a few weeks later.In the rising tide of awareness on male sexual misconduct and the empowerment of the #MeToo and Time's Up movements, the timeliness of the film's message couldn't be more appropriate.
The release will be prefaced by a premiere fundraiser (benefitting Planned Parenthood, Movember Foundation, Jewish Healing & Hospice Center, The Men's Center LA and ManKind Project) on May 16th in Los Angeles with a panel discussion following the screening with representatives from Movember, ManKind Project, The Good Men Project and renowned psychotherapist Dr. Stephen Johnson and additional speakers.
The film which, amongst others, stars legendary Timothy Bottoms, is a comedy/drama about the modern phenomenon of men's support groups. It takes a very intimate look at the need for men to learn to talk about their feelings and find their integrity and sense of community in a world with changing attitudes on masculinity. By turns funny and poignant, the film soberly tackles issues of male shame, relationships, fatherhood, sex addiction, depression, suicide, competition and grief. The film uses humor and irreverence to open the subject up to a mainstream audience and celebrate men in a fresh way, with depth and compassion.
The actors in the film still meet up once month continuing the tradition started by the film.
WELCOME TO THE MEN'S GROUP takes us inside the intimate dynamic of an all-male support group when they gather one morning for a ritual breakfast and their unique form of male bonding. One Sunday a month, these eight men refrain from beer and football to sit in a circle where they share their personal issues, in the noble hope of becoming a bit more evolved than their fathers. Against their best efforts to maintain a civilized therapeutic forum, the group descends into chaos, as long-standing conflicts and SECRETS come to the surface and threaten to destroy the group's TRUST forever. The film delves frankly into themes of male identity, competition, sexuality, and grief.
