New villains, we lose another ally and Central City celebrates THE FLASH with a bang. Season 2 started tonight. We'll get you caught up before the parade passes by.

Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) and Heat Wave (Dominec Purcell) are battling with THE FLASH (Grant Gustin). Firestorm (aka Ronnie Raymond, played Robbie Amell) arrives in the nick of time and takes out Cold before Cold gets the drop on Barry. Teamwork: yeah!

Everyone is all smiles at S.T.A.R. Labs. Det. Joe West (Jesse L. Martin), Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker), Cisco (Carlos Valdes) and even Iris (Candice Patton) are all on hand to congradulate Bary and Ronnie on their double takedown of two baddies.

And if you are thinking it is too good to be true, the arrival of Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh) and Eddie Thawne (Rick Cosnett) should make us realize this is a dream (since both Wells and Thawne were dead at the end of last season).

And sure enough, it was a dream sequence. Barry has disbanded Team Flash (the better to keep the people he cares about safe). He speeds off to investigate the death of a worker at the nuclear power plant. Barry's analysis is the guy was strangled, but it wasn't Gorilla Grodd. Det. West is releaved to hear that and asks Barry if he'll be making an appearance at the celebration the city is throwing for THE FLASH.

Back at the precinct, Captain Singh (Patrick Sabongui) has grown a beard over hiatus. Cisco is now working at the precinct as a scientific advisor (doesn't anyone go to the policy acadamy before they get hired in Central City). He's designing weapons for Det. West and the rest of the force to take down metahumans.

Caitlin, meanwhile, has gone to work at rival Mercury Labs. Iris is charged with trying to get Barry to attend the fest as the major wants to present THE FLASH with the key to the city. She meets Barry at the coffee shop. Barry has been trying to single-handedly repair it after it was nearly destroyed last season.

And it isn't the only place that Barry has been rebuilding. He feels guilty for the destruction that he was unable to prevent and he certainly doesn't want the key to the city. When did this show become as somber as ARROW?

We flashback to Ronnie saying goodbye to his new bride Caitlin as he merges with Dr. Stein (Victor Garber) to become Firestorm and races off to assist Barry in closing the singularity. There is a burst of fire, Firestorm falls, Barry catches the falling body. Stein and Ronnie have separated and now there is just Dr. Stein.

And it suddenly makes sense why Barry doesn't want to attend the parade. He didnt' save the city, Ronnie did.

At the festival, the mayor gives a speech as Atom Smasher (Adam Copeland) pushes his way through the crowd. As THE FLASH, Barry shows up to accept the key, but not before Atom Smasher tosses a food cart at him. Barry quickly moves himself and the mayor out of the way.

Cisco has a vision and realizes he has seen Atom Smasher before. He grabs his new weapon and tosses it to Det. West, but it only causes Atom Smasher to grow in size. Barry throws some gas cannisters at him, which Joe shoots mid-air, causing an explosion. It doesn't really slow Atom Smasher down.

Cisco visits Caitlin at her new lab. He tries to draw her back into Team Flash. She's reluctant, but eventually gives in.

Barry is visited by a lawyer. In his will, Harrison Wells left S.T.A.R. Labs to Barry. The attorney also hands him memory stick that Barry must watch before the terms of the will can be executed. Given Wells (well, Eobard Thawne who was impersonating the late professor) killed his mom, he has no desire to watch it. Beside, an intruder alert goes of at S.T.A.R. Labs and he races over there to find just about all of Team Flash has reassembled (minus Caitlin). What's more, Dr. Stein beats Cisco to naming the new metahuman (Atom Smasher, because he smashes and absorbs atoms).

Barry confronts Atom Smasher and has his butt handed to him. He's simply no match for the guy. Stein has Cisco trigger an alarm, which gives Barry enough time to speed back to the Lab where he passes out and we have an ARROW like flashback. Joe is raising young Barry. He's made mac and cheese, but Barry is upset by the situation of mom dead and dad in prison for her murder.

Barry wakes up with Joe at his bedside. He convinces Barry to fix the thing that matters much: Team Flash. Barry visits Caitlin at Mercury Labs. She doesn't blame him for Ronnie's death, she blames herself. Afterall, Ronnie had asked her to leave Central City, but she refused. As a result, she can't stand the sight of S.T.A.R. Labs.

He hands her a hankerchief and as he does the digital recorder falls. She offers to watch the recording with him. In it, he gives Barry everything he wants: he admits on tape to murdering Barry's mom.

Caitlin has also come up with a plan to take down Atom Smasher: overexpose him to the radiation he seems to feed on. And before you know it, the dark Central City sky is illuminated with THE FLASH signal (does Batman know about this?).

Barry leads him back to the nuclear power plant and into a containment room that they flood with radiation. As he lays dying, he tells Barry "He promised he'd take me home if I killed you." And when Barry follows up with "who," Atom Smasher's dying word is "Zoom."

Barry meets his father Henry (John Wesley Shipp) as he is released from prison. There's a big welcome home party, but Henry drops the bomb that he doesn't plan on staying in Central City as Barry cannot be all he can be with him hanging around. And the next day he leave Central City, promising to return when Barry needs him.

Back at the Lab, Team Flash is priding themselves for finally installing additional security. Enter Jay Garrick (Teddy Sears). He tells them his name and reveals that their world is in danger. So much for their new security.

Comic book fans know that Jay Garrick is the name of the the original golden age Flash, but it looks like we'll have to wait until next week to get his backstory, because that's how this episode ends.

Sad to see Ronnie go without much of a death scene, but we are moving forward, I guess. What are your thoughts? Comment below and follow me @triggercric and follow @BWWTVWorld for all the latest updates, scoops and recaps.
