COZUMEL, Mexico, March 14, 2016 /PRNewswire-iReach/ El Cid Vacations Club notes that female sea turtles venture to the waters of the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico to lay eggs each year in late May. In Mexico, Cozumel is the ideal place to witness this spectacular event. As the tide rises in late May, the turtles begin to arrive on shore.

Spotting a sea turtle is a unique experience and makes any trip to Cozumel something to talk about for years to come. The experts at El Cid Vacations Club note that the docile and beautiful sea turtles are a part of Cozumel's diverse ecosystem. The so-called green turtles and the loggerheads are just two of the more common species that visitors are likely to see laying their eggs in the sand.
What many people do not realize is just how large these incredible creatures can be. A fully grown sea turtle can weigh nearly 500 pounds and sport a shell that is up to 4 feet in diameter.
Swimmers and snorkelers at many of Cozumel's beaches have chance encounters with the lovely animals and some are even lucky enough to get underwater photos of these one-of-a-kind meetings. Turtles are reptiles that breathe air, just as humans do, but they are able to hold their breath for between 4 and 7 hours depending upon how active they are.
El Cid Vacations Club points out that sea turtle nesting season in Cozumel, when the females return to land to lay their eggs, runs from late May to November each year. Sea turtles live in all the oceans of the world except for the arctic; and while there are seven species in all, six of them can be found in Mexico each year during nesting season.
Sea turtles live their entire lives at sea except for egg-laying time when the females return to the exact spot where they themselves were born. According to El Cid Vacations Club, experts believe the animals are able to use a form of internal magnetism to find the spot where they were born. Each turtle typically lays about 200 eggs, which sit in the sand for nearly 2 months before hatching.
In Cozumel, police as well as private citizens guard the beaches where the hatching eggs are located to protect them from human and animal predators. As "turtle season" approaches, El Cid Vacations Club points out that a visit to Mexico is the perfect way to witness this amazing natural phenomenon.
