BWW Reviews: CROWN REEF BEACH RESORT AND WATERPARK in Myrtle Beach, SC - Spectacular Views, Ideal Location, Family Friendly

Sprawling in spectacular magnificence across a prime location in Myrtle Beach, the Crown Reef Beach Resort and Waterpark offers the perfect family getaway for spring break, summer vacation, or a quick weekend of fun at any time of the year.

Recently undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation, the Crown Reef has made major improvements including an unmatched waterpark, breathtaking oceanfront views, and in-suite amenities to offer all the comforts of home, thus catapulting it as one of the premier destinations in South Carolina. Although improvements still continue, you won't be disappointed in the Crown Reef as your ultimate vacation destination.

Although wait lines were particularly long upon my check-in, staff was extremely friendly and quick to service eager travelers who were very anxious to begin their vacation.

The Crown Reef now offers a brand new oceanfront Waterpark that is four stories tall and features two giant slides (the TWISTER Body Slide and EXPLOSION Tube Slide), a kiddie slide, and a Silly Sub water play area for the younger kids. Open year-round, you can enjoy all the fun without worrying about any fickle weather.

The ultra-relaxing 575-foot lazy river is the longest in Myrtle Beach that runs both inside and outside throughout the resort. Additionally, there are plenty of large indoor and outdoor pools and heavenly hot tubs for all your relaxation needs. The pools, waterslides and hot tubs are kept at a comfortable temperature and were never overcrowded on my visit over the popular spring break period.

Guest Rooms

Also newly renovated are 514 guest rooms and suites, each uniquely situated with balconies overlooking stunning oceanfront views. Spacious suites include a full refrigerator, microwave, stove, coffee pot, flat screen TVs in the bedroom and living area, plus complimentary Wi-Fi in the rooms and throughout the entire resort. Also offered are special Jacuzzi Suites, available in King or Queen sized rooms. Regular guest rooms contain a mini fridge and microwave.

We stayed in a one-bedroom suite which was more than enough room to accommodate our family of 2 adults and 3 kids. The kitchen is central to the space, with the bedroom (2 full beds) on one side and the living area on the other. There is plenty of storage throughout. The bathroom is located right off the kitchen so it's convenient to both areas. The living room contains a pull-out sleeper sofa and a murphy bed to make the most of the space when not in use. A sliding glass door opens to a magnificent view of the Atlantic Ocean as well as a great view of the waterpark and pool area below.

Kudos to the housekeeping staff who did a tremendous job maintaining and up-keeping the room in the most pristine and efficient way. Towels were replenished daily, dishes were cleaned and put away, beds were made, bathroom was scrubbed, and a pleasant clean scent filled the air every day.

The Crown Reef offers several family friendly options for your dining needs, including the Loco Gecko Restaurant, pool bar and grill, Grab n' Go Grill and Coffee Bar, and the Swirl Ice Cream & Sweet Shop.

Located at the Town Center Dining, Entertainment and Fun Zone, the Grab n'Go Grill and Coffee Bar features a full buffet breakfast, quick lunch and dinner items as well as coffee. Food is fresh and the dining area offers another spectacular view of the ocean. The logistics of the breakfast buffet, however, still seem to be a work in progress. Long lines at peak hours seemed to aggravate patrons, and I believe there could be a more efficient way of seating and serving customers to make the process run more smoothly.

The Loco Gecko Beach Shak Restaurant features beach dining with a variety of menu options including salads, pizzas and burgers. It has both indoor and outdoor oceanfront patio seating and a fun, casual dining experience. Again, perhaps due to the rush of spring break, it seemed like service was a little slower than usual to accommodate the heavy rush, and often left customers frustrated instead of relaxed.

If you don't want to dine in the resort but don't want to venture out too far, a great option is Damon's Grill, which is located right next to the Crown Reef and offers fabulous oceanfront views and a delicious, reasonably-priced menu.

Game On! Arcade

Game On! arcade is located in the Town Center Dining, Entertainment and Fun Zone. Kids can enjoy gaming by swiping their video game card and playing for tickets to redeem for prizes.

Games include air hockey, Ice-Ball, Sink It, Doodle Jump, Monopoly and more. The arcade area is open, bright and cheerful, and perfectly situated between the Grab 'n Grill and Loco Gecko dining areas.

Although the efficiency could use some improvement, the staff was always courteous, friendly, and eager to help in any way possible. Because of the enormity of the resort and popularity of spring break, it took more patience during times of check-in, guest services, and restaurant service. However, the staff and other representatives were always friendly and quick to remedy any less than pleasant encounter.

Local Area/Other Attractions

Centrally located in the heart of Myrtle Beach on the south end, the Crown Reef is perfectly situated near Broadway at the Beach, Barefoot's Landing, Children's Museums, WonderWorks, and an endless amount of fun family activities, watersports, restaurants, groceries, convenience stores and more - not to mention the spectacular sandy beach that is directly connected to the resort. The options are truly endless!

Downwind Sails. Literally steps away from the Crown Reef, Downwind Sails offers several options to enjoy various watersport activities, including parasailing, jet skiing, banana boat rides, kayaks, Hobie Cats and more. We tried parasailing for the first time during our visit and had a wonderful experience. Staff was friendly, knowledgable, answered questions, and made us feel at ease for a safe and fun experience. Putt-Putt Golf. Themed miniature golf options are abundant in Myrtle Beach and we tried several of them. Our standout favorite was Jurassic Golf, which is located within walking distance of the Crown Reef. The course was clean, well-lit, entertaining, and state-of-the-art with ramps and special putters for the handicapped. Special shout-out to Mike who was very helpful and informative and made our experience a memorable one. For more information on Jurassic Golf, visit:

Adrenaline Adventures. Only a few miles from the Crown Reef, Adrenaline Adventures offers an exciting zip lining and extreme Free Fall adventure. The instructors are accredited by the Association for Challenge Course Technology so you can ensure a safe but thrilling experience. To learn more, visit:

Although most of the major renovations are complete, the Crown Reef is still improving on its massive resort, including installing new carpets throughout, adding artwork, updating the fitness room, resurfacing the bottom of the lazy river, and improving on the efficiency of the staff. I also think better signage would also help new travelers nagivate the enormous resort.

In the meantime, with all the choices in Myrtle Beach, you won't be disappointed in the Crown Reef Resort and Waterpark. Whether you're looking for a spring break getaway, longer summer vacation, or quick weekend of fun, the Crown Reef is the perfect family-friendly destination for all your traveling needs.
