2017/2018 Royal Opera House Cinema Series Continues With David McVicar's Production Of Verdi's RIGOLETTO

The Royal Opera House's 2017/2018 Cinema Series continues with director David McVicar's production of Giuseppe Verdi's RIGOLETTO, with libretto by Francesco Maria Piave after Victor Hugo's play, Le roi s'amuse.

Conductor is Alexander Joel, revival director is Justin Way. Set designer is Michael Vale, costume designer is Paule Constable, movement director is Leah Hausman, revival movement director is Jo Meredith. The Royal Opera Chorus director is William Spaulding. Co-concert master is Sergey Levitin. The production was directed for the screen by Francesca Kemp.

The cast features Michael Fabiano (Duke of Mantua), Luis Gomes (Matteo Borsa, a courtier), Simon Shibambu (Count Ceprano, a courtier), Jacquelyn Stucker (Countess Ceprano), Dimitri Platanias (Rigoletto, Court Jester), Dominic Sedgwick (Marullo, Court Poet), James Rutherford (Count Monterone), Andrea Mastroni (Sparafucile, A professional assassin), Lucy Crowe (Gilda, Rigoletto's daughter), Kathleen Wilkinson (Giovanna, Gila's nurse), Louise Armit (Page), Olle Zetterström (Court Usher), and Nadia Krasteva (Maddalena, Sparafucile's sister), with the Royal Opera chorus as ladies and gentlemen of the court and servants.

The remaining Royal Opera titles are Puccini's Tosca, directed by Jonathan Kent; Bizet's Carmen, in Barrie Kosky's acclaimed, unconventional production from Frankfurt; and Verdi's Macbeth, conducted by Antonio Pappano, with Anna Netrebko taking on the role of Lady Macbeth for the first time at Covent Garden.

The Royal Ballet titles include Christopher Wheeldon's Olivier Award-winning ballet based on Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale, with a score by Joby Talbot; a triple bill celebrating the centenary of American composer Leonard Bernstein, featuring the premiere of two new works by associate choreographers of The Royal Ballet Wayne McGregor, Resident Choreographer of The Royal Ballet, and Christopher Wheeldon, Artistic Associate, and Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett's Age of Anxiety, set to Bernstein's Symphony No. 2 completing the bill; a Kenneth MacMillan Celebration, with the epic Manon, featuring the score by Jules Massenet; and the eagerly anticipated new production of Swan Lake, by Liam Scarlett, after Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov.
