The Dividends is a project that brings two musical forces together - Grammy Award winning producer S1 whose credits include Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Madonna, Common, and Beyoncé among others and critically acclaimed singer and songwriter Sarah Jaffe. The two Dallas based talents first crossed paths in 2013 when Jaffe collaborated with The Cannabinoids (a group that features S1 and Erykah Badu) on a remix for her 2012 single "Glorified High." The duo clicked and after writing a number of songs together - including "Bad Guy" off the Eminem's Grammy Award winning MMLP2 album - The Dividends are finally gearing up for Far From Away (Vol. 1) - a seven song cassette/USB only release that is scheduled to drop on June 24th to coincide with The Dividends first Dallas, TX headlining show at Trees.
Far From Away includes five never before released songs along with last summer's stunner - "Summer Glo" featuring Sam Lao - that premiered on Okayplayer. "Summer Glo" dropped in August just ahead of Jaffe's Made In America Festival debut where S1 joined her on stage to perform a few of The Dividends tracks live. The other song is a bonus track and was one of the very first The Dividends ever released - "Fool's Gold" featuring Raekwon - that premiered in December 2013 on VIBE. Complete track-listing for Far From Away (Vol. 1) is below. For both artists, working together has proved not only fruitful and successful, but something both really enjoy. When asked about the project, Jaffe said, "I love that The Dividends started with S1 just taking a shot in the dark by contacting me. He randomly messaged me on Twitter asking if I would be interested in writing some hooks for him. From an outsider's perspective one might assume that the same girl who wrote 'Clementine' might not step too much outside of that realm stylistically. Truth is, I was waiting for that chance. I am a huge pop and hip-hop fan and writing hooks for S1 was more than liberating. It opened up a whole new door for me...one that I was wanting opened but didn't know how. Thankfully we worked together so well that we decided to start our own project. Thus came the idea for The Dividends. We have built quite the archive together and we are both so excited about finally releasing our first body of work."Videos
