Music fans everywhere shocked to learn that iconic rocker Tom Petty passed away yesterday after he suffered a cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu. He was 66. His longtime manager shared the news on Twitter late last night, after there were misreports of his death.

Hollywood took to social media to send their thoughts and prayers to Petty's family and express their gratitude for the singer's legacy.

In addition to the kind tweets, some musicians honored the legend during their shows. For example, during Coldplay's gig in Portland, REM guitarist Peter Buck joined the band onstage in a tribute performance of Petty's "Free Fallin,'" after a moment of silence.

E Street band guitarist Steven Van Zandt also paid tribute to Petty during his show in Baltimore, performing Petty's "Even the Losers."
