In just four months Dancers Over 40’s youtube channel, www.youtube.com/dancersover40, has seen over 10,000 video hits. “Subscribers” from all over the world have joined the informative and entertaining channel. It has also reconnected many DO40 dancers with friends and former dancers who didn’t know how to get in touch with them. The 78 video clips include performances, panel discussions and concert work. This is a testament to the hard work the Dancers Over 40 members have put in over the past few years.
The panels include the “In the Company of Friends: Dancers from the 40s and 50s,” “The Women of Fosse,” “The Men of Fosse” and “The Dancers and Creative Talents of Gower Champion.” Additionally there are clips from DO40 on MetroArts/Thirteen from 1999 and DO40 concert footage as well. Many of DO40’s early tapes were either lost or incompatible with current technology, but DO40 is ready with another year of new panels and performances to continue chronicling DO40 members’ history, legacy and lives. Also, casting directors who call the DO40 hotline in search of mature talent now have a place to go and see the dancers “live!” DO40 members have already been contacted for print work, commercials and theater auditions because of this exposure.
Dancers Over 40’s next panel, “Jack Cole: Alive and Kicking”, is set for Monday October 13th at 8pm at Symphony Space, 95th and Broadway and will feature the dances and dancers of Jack Cole. It is DO40’s first foray into the world of multi-media, with video and rare film clips featured at the event. The panel features DO40 Advisory Board members Chita Rivera and Marge Champion, as well as many more hoofers from the Golden Age of dance. Tickets are only $15.00 for DO40 members, $35.00 for non-members in advance and are available by calling Symphony Space at 212-864-5400 or going to their website, www.symphonyspace.org. Beginning this fall, Dancers Over 40 will be donating a portion of their resources to Bebe Neuwirth’s new initiative at the Actors Fund, The Dancers’ Resource. It was created to assist dancers in all aspects of their lives and career. DO40 is not only promoting their own history and legacy, but will now help by donating yearly to this important fund to help dancers enrich their lives and continue their artistic journey. DO40 is also a Resource, and donates the videos from their events to the Jerome Robbins Dance Collection at the Lincoln Center Library for the Performing Arts for others now and in the future to be able to see the videos of the best of Broadway and dance world from the people who made you laugh, cry and stand in your seats for over 50 YEARS. DO40’s motto is “Our History, Our Legacy, Our Lives.”
Dancers Over 40, Inc. was created as a not-for-profit organization to provide a community of support in response to the fiscal -- as well as physical - needs of mature dancers, choreographers and related artists. The goals are to seek educational opportunities, present seminars, socials and panel discussions on topics important to mature dancers concerned about their ability to continue to live and work in a creative environment and continue the legacy to those dancers about to begin their journey. Founded in 1994 by a group of Broadway dancers, the growing organization also publishes a newsletter. Memberships are available for all, and you do not have to be a dancer to join and support this fantastic organization.
