THE MUSIC OF Robert Schumann FEATURED ON SHELDON CLASSICS SERIES

ST. LOUIS, MO - The Sheldon presents Robert Schumann, Wednesday, January 27, 2010 in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall. We celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of the great Romantic composer Robert Schumann with performances of his Sonata for Violin, No. 1 in A Minor by Symphony Concert Master David Halen, and the Quartet for piano, violin, viola and cello. Featuring pianist Peter Henderson, the evening will also include Schumann lieder and solo music for piano.

David Halen served as Assistant Concertmaster with the Houston Symphony Orchestra under Sergiu Comissiona and Christoph Eschenbach until 1991. He then came to St. Louis , where he was permanently named Concertmaster in September 1995, without audition, and with the endorsement of then Music Directors Leonard Slatkin and Hans Vonk. As co-founder and artistic director of the Innsbrook Institute, Halen coordinates a weeklong festival, in June, of exciting musical performances and an enclave for aspiring artists. In August, he is artistic director of the Missouri River Festival of the Arts in Boonville , Missouri . His numerous accolades include the 2002 St. Louis Arts and Entertainment Award for Excellence, and an honorary doctorate from Central Missouri State University and from the University of Missouri-Saint Louis. Halen plays a 1753 Giovanni Battista Guadagnini violin, made in Milan.

A versatile and inquisitive pianist, Peter Henderson is much in demand as a chamber musician. A member of the St. Louis-based Ilex Piano Trio, Henderson also partners in a duo formed in 1999 with noted German violist Roland Glassl, a member of the Mandelring String Quartet. As a freelance pianist, Henderson performs in collaboration with several members of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra under the auspices of the Orchestra's Community Partnerships Program and in other local settings, such as the innovative Crossings series, radio station KFUO Classic 99's "From the Garden Live," The Sheldon's Classical Series, and the Innsbrook Institute Music Festival. A former full-time member of the Hot Springs, Virginia-based Garth Newel Piano Quartet, Henderson participated in the Quartet's inaugural recording of the G-Minor Quartets of Mozart and Brahms. Henderson holds the degree Doctor of Music in Piano Performance, Literature, and Pedagogy from Indiana University-Bloomington. His piano instructors have included Dr. Karen Shaw and Dr. Jay Mauchley.
