Zainab Amadahy (author of "Resistance") and JF Garrard (author of "The Undead Sorceress") will be holding a joint Visionary Women's Fiction Book Launch at York University in October 2014. The purpose of this launch is to introduce Visionary fiction books featuring strong female characters written by women.
The genres of science fiction and fantasy tend to be male dominated. By introducing female fiction, the two authors hope to generate an interest in new, multicultural voices which realistically portray women in society from their point of view. "Many characteristics of strong female super heroes today were dreamed up by males and sometimes they are quite unrealistic," author JF Garrard states. "For example, many male super heroes are physically strong and fully clothed, but it's not the case with female super heroes. In my book (The Undead Sorceress) I portray a main female character learning to fight physically, but there was no need to dress her in scantily clad outfits. I also emphasize that strength is not only physical, but also comes from the inner core as the character deals with complicated conflicts. It was also important to have multiple ethnic groups in the book as our world is quite global and our stories should reflect this."Videos
