The book's story begins when Jozef Pokoj and his bride Ana emigrate to the United States, after Jozef has nightmares about the Nazi invasion of Poland. They change their name to Powell, and Jozef lands a job at the Ford Motor Company.

Edward, their eldest child is introduced to photography by a family friend, Trevor Humphries. After surviving the devastating crash and the death of his father, Edward convinces Trevor to expand their business. A while later, Edward marries Sandra Latham and they have a child they named Christopher.

When Christopher suffers a relapse of chicken pox at college and almost dies, he learns he cannot have children of his own. As the photographic industry reaches its boon, Powell Photographic takes its place as one of the biggest photographic plants in the country in the 1970's. After that, Christopher marries a Vietnam War widow named Anne Thompson. Anne has a son named Ben, who turns out to be of questionable character. When a new employee Vicki Brennan, meets Anne, a bond forms between the two, and Ben becomes threatened.

Written in a straightforward manner, story given life by strong and unforgettable characters, Atwood's work will keep readers hooked to her unique story of love and family.
