"I was going to write a book about my grandfather who was in the British Army," explains Patrick Slaney, "but I found that my grandmother had a more interesting life, so I decided to write a work of fiction based on her life, but using the facts relating to my grandfather." With this formula of truth and imagination, Slaney brings the lives of his grandparents to a new audience in "The Smiles and Tears of Love" (published by Trafford Publishing), his 2012 book which is getting a revived and updated marketing campaign in 2013.

When Mabel learns of her husband's death from a battle in Arras, she begins to think back to the days of old. Born to a doctor in a small town in Ireland, she reminisces about growing up as a woman in the late nineteenth century. She remembers the first time she saw her future husband and how their relationship played out in the early years of marriage.

Mabel talks about her travels around the world following behind her husband, and how she was expected to act while with him. She shares detailed accounts of woes and strife worrying about him while he was off at war while she cradled their newborn child, and how frustration fueled her passion towards him which turned to an affair and of a lover lost in South Africa.

She comes back to reality feeling the anxiety she had when her husband left for the battle and how she must stay strong as she takes her two children back to her parents to live.

As Slaney looks back over his grandparent's life, both real and fictional, he knows readers will feel the emotions laced throughout the book. "There are plenty of times when she is happy and smiles," states Slaney, "and unfortunately, plenty of times when the tears come."
