BALTIMORE

Nicholas Lambros, while one day perusing through a thrift shop in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, found an old book that would change his life forever. A published and award-winning poet, Lambros discovered something that ignited his mutual love for art and history.

He was thumbing through a copy of "High Adventure," published in 1917, when a letter written during World War I fell at his feet. Having served in the U.S. Army, he had good reason to be immediately drawn into the letter's content and was fascinated by the man who wrote it.

"War and literature have enjoyed a peculiar sort of marriage," Lambros said. "The letter I found urged me to research World War I. Although I never ultimately discovered who employed its writer, the characters in the letter demanded their story be told. I spent years researching and writing what I hoped would be an informative and entertaining book to both historians and laypeople."

"To End All War" is the title of Lambros's historical novel. It blends history and adventure with action and suspense; it mixes poetry with passion. In the novel, three siblings of an upper-class Baltimore family find themselves drawn into the war. Through their stories, Lambros uses the characters-a fighter pilot, a doctor and a counterspy-to relate levels of patriotism, love, duty and sacrifice in the greatest conflict history had yet seen.

"War and its consequences are not pretty," Lambros said. "Countries that go to battle always forget that war has no real winner, only two classes of losers: big losers and bigger losers."

However serious an antiwar novel it may be, "To End All War" has its pages filled with exciting moments. Using a wide range of captivating action, the excitement is coupled with a strict adherence to real history. Readers will learn something about World War I and how it shaped the world that we find ourselves in today.

"You never know what you might find in a book," he said.
