According to RAINN, every 98 seconds an American is sexually assaulted. Meanwhile, only six out of every 1,000 perpetrators will end up in prison. In the case of Mary Ellen Sinclair, she was childhood victim of abuse and her father was the offender. Now, Sinclair shares a fictionalized account of her adolescence in "A Girl's Courage."

To the outside world, seven-year old Mary Ellen appears to have a normal life and a happy family. However, unbeknownst to those around her, she is the target of her father's sexual abuse. She is forced to suffer in silence from her earliest memories until age twelve when she discovers the courage to confront her father and demand freedom. At 18-years old, Mary Ellen begins to build a life away from her troubled home, she is drawn back at the mention her little sister.

As the trauma of her own past resurfaces, she begins to wonder if her father has started abusing her sibling. In an effort to heal, she seeks professional counseling and revisits her painful memories. Mary Ellen eventually comes to term with her past, finding healing and happiness in the process.

"A Girl's Courage began as a private journal I kept while attending support groups for abuse survivors," Sinclair said. "I decided to turn my entries into a book so that others may see how I moved past my trauma. My goal is to show the importance of leaving behind a life of merely surviving and, instead, face your pain, discover and use the gifts within you to help you to move onto a life of thriving."
