New Memoir Discloses One Woman's Experience Leaving a Cult Author Makena McChesney knows what it's like to be manipulated and controlled. To save others from what she went through, McChesney shares her experience spending 12 years in a confining Christian cult in her new memoir, "Seeking Oz: My Twelve-Year Journey in a Cult" (published by Balboa Press). The book is available for purchase at: https://www.amazon.com/Seeking-Oz-Twelve-Year-Journey-Cult-ebook/dp/B07F3Z8KN8.

Written in an easy-to-read conversational narrative style, the book discusses self-doubt, releasing fear and taking personal responsibility. Beginning in a rural U.S. community in the late '70s and continuing to early '90s, McChesney details how the cult was started by a charismatic pastor. She also describes what factors contributed to her vulnerability and eventual entrapment. The overall theme of the book is to encourage victims to be strong, release fear and take personal responsibility when they find themselves entrapped in difficult or harmful situations.

McChesney says, "I want my readers to feel comfortable and motivated to challenge any belief system that is exclusive and intolerant of others, love themselves foremost and allow themselves the freedoms and choices that make them unique and loving individuals, (and) avoid any situations in which they find themselves entrapped and imprisoned."

An excerpt from "Seeking Oz":
We have the power and the birthright to release ourselves from being victims and propel ourselves into freedom. It sounds easy-why wouldn't we? But first, we need the courage to change our thinking and possibly our outdated belief systems. We need to ask ourselves the big questions, such as "What if I am believing a lie?"
