As a father, Lawrence Williams knows all too well the challenges of raising an autistic adult male and what is takes to raise him to be a happy, well-adjusted, young man.

This personal experience informed his debut book, "Hugs," the fictional tale of a father named Steve and his family's journey to raise their autistic son with all of the challenges that arise along the way, from the initial diagnosis to how it permeates multiple facets of everyday life.

The book also presents in the storyline a cure for autism, told in the form of Steve's abilities, which manifest in the form of using a simple hug to cure autistic children one at a time. Though these abilities have consequences, as each time Steve hugs a child, he loses a bit of his life, and if he hugs his own son, the power will disappear.

As the novel progresses, Steve's family grapples with the moral decision of healing as many autistic children as possible while recognizing the grave circumstances of Steve's gift.

"As a parent to an autistic adult son in real life, I know that the journey can be challenging, lonely, and exasperating at times," Williams said. "But with 'Hugs,' families can know that they are not alone and find comfort in the unique experience that is caring for these special individuals."

In "Hugs," parents and families alike can experience the journey and pure joy that unconditional love brings.
