Maureena P. Fritz's new book "Daughter of a Voice: I - Thou Encounters in the Book of Genesis" (published by Trafford Publishing) is about encountering and living in a relationship. Using Martin Buber's philosophy of I-Thou and Jewish Midrash, Fritz reflects on the biblical personalities in the Book of Genesis as a means of teaching the art of living in I-Thou versus I-It relationships.

"For many God is dead, but it's their concept of God that is dead," Fritz says. "This book will help them meet the God they encounter who may differ radically from all they have been taught."

An excerpt from "Daughter of a Voice":

"A life of dialogue! A life of encounter! The art of living is learning how to be in relationship. Meditations on the biblical characters in the book of Genesis provide lessons on how to live in relationship with the world, with humanity, with God. All real living is meeting."

The appeal of "Daughter of a Voice," Fritz believes, is found in its accessibility to any reader. "It's an academic book in non-academic language," she says. "Through story/midrash, rather than theological language, it presents God in the midst of human life. The Indian poet Tagore wrote: 'At the immortal touch of Thy hands my little heart loses its limits in joy and gives birth to utterance ineffable.'"

Maureena P. Fritz, N.D.S., is professor emerita, Faculty of Theology, U.S.M.C., University of Toronto, Canada, and presently Academic Advisor of the Bat Kol Institute in Jerusalem, a center that fosters Jewish Studies for Christians, defined as study of the Word of God (Torah) within its Jewish milieu, using Jewish sources, ancient and modern, with the help of Jewish and Christian scholars. She has published a series of books on praying with the Hebrew Scriptures.
