CHICAGO, Sept. 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ Tami Gilbert's new book, "Career CPR: Meaningful Strategies to Resuscitate or Nurture Your Career," was prompted in part by her observation that too many people she has known have needlessly suffered in jobs they hated. "Life is too short to suffer every day in a job that we hate," she writes in the book. "The average person spends about 100,000 hours of their life working. Therefore, it's important to be happy with what we do. There are many ways to learn how to feel more rewarded and fulfilled in our careers," she says.

Gilbert, a registered nurse and MBA holder, covers a range of topics in her new book, released on Labor Day, September 5, everything from how to interview for jobs to avoiding habits that can wreck careers and how to tell if your career is heading for a triple bypass.

For people who are dissatisfied with their jobs, or feel disengaged or bored with them, Gilbert offers this advice:

  • Many people are bored because their jobs have become too easy. If that hits home for you, volunteer to take on new tasks and gain more responsibility.
  • Shake up your daily work routine. If you always eat at your desk, eat outside, visit the cafeteria or take a walk during your break. Change the order in which you do your tasks.
  • Avoid telling yourself "this is so boring." Articulating that sentiment makes you feel worse. Substitute "this is exciting."
  • Seek to do more than just do your job and go home. Be consciously visible by speaking up in meetings, asking for high-visibility projects and mentoring others.
  • Make a ten-year plan for where you want to be in your career.
