Graciana del Castillo, a renowned academic and a former senior economist in the Cabinet of the UN Secretary-General, has published "the most exciting book of the decade showing how sustainable growth rather than war is the answer to extremism, insurgency and poverty." "Guilty Party: The International Community in Afghanistan" (published by Xlibris) is essential reading to understand what went wrong with the Afghan War and what can still be done to bring peace, stability, and prosperity to the country and region.

The Afghan War not only led to tremendous human cost and fiscal cost to US taxpayers, but also to security, political, and economic instability in the country and a flood of refugees to Europe and elsewhere. As the 2016 Epilogue notes, the country is immersed in a financial crisis and aid addiction from which it will take decades to recover. US-led foreign intervention has failed to support the political economy of peace which is key to security stabilization and political reform. Dr. del Castillo argues that President Ghani's economic model is more of the same and makes proposals on how to change the misguided policies and misplaced priorities of the past.

"Guilty Party: The International Community in Afghanistan" has received numerous acclaim including the "Reviewer's Choice" award from Blue Ink Reviews. An excerpt of the review reads:

"[Graciana del Castillo's] cohesive, intelligent writing style effortlessly weaves personal anecdotes with exhaustively sourced academic conclusions, making this essential reading for anyone who desires a comprehensive backdrop to modern Afghanistan."
