Author Roy R. Manstan documents the role of the Cold Warriors - civilian engineers and divers responsible for antisubmarine warfare technologies that kept the Soviet threat at bay during the Cold War - in his new book, "Cold Warriors: The Navy's Engineering and Diving Support Unit" (published by AuthorHouse).

In his story, Manstan emphasizes the importance of teamwork when facing any challenge, and the willingness of individuals, organizations and governments to accept intellectual, physical and financial risk to accomplish a common goal.

"The Cold War remained cold because all the players aggressively pursued a strategy of deterrence, aimed at keeping the opponent's finger off the trigger," Manstan says.

"Cold Warriors" relives the history of a team of Navy-trained civilian engineers and divers whose worldwide efforts, Manstan says, helped keep our country one step ahead of the Soviet Union, allowing policy makers to pursue the "strategy of deterrence" during the Cold War.

"The Cold War was a success story, and understanding the efforts of the Cold Warriors will help readers appreciate what that generation accomplished," Manstan says. "This book describes the challenges of the previous generation, where mediocrity was unacceptable and failure was not an option."
