CHICAGO - "Capitalism and Perpetual Adolescence: Essays and Lectures of George S. Becker: Edited by Jonathan D. Lewis MD" (published by Xlibris UK) presents a dire outlook with its comparisons between modern capitalist societies and cultures in the Amazon's jungles, painting a portrait of ideologically-induced stagnation. Social sciences academicians and philosophers will find the insights of this posthumously published assessment invaluable, as it shows the effects of modern socioeconomic developments on human growth and development.

The work has been compiled and edited by Lewis, Becker's student. It presents a critical commentary on today's society and modern man's place in it, providing a philosophical underpinning for the social sciences, a goad to introspection and thoughtfulness about what is possible for man to achieve and a sober awareness of the sociocultural, economic and ideological context around him. It shows that the values and social structures of capitalism create an ideology stunting personality development at the adolescent level, an infantilization of society making full psychological maturity extremely difficult to achieve in a post-industrial capitalistic environment.

Walter A Davis, Professor of English Emeritus, Ohio State University says this: "What is thinking but the courage to work alone developing concepts that are lasting because they grow out of a living relationship to a subject matter. Academic fashions come and go while the thought of the social anthropologist George Becker remains the contemporary of the future. Here assembled by his student and friend, the psychiatrist Jon Lewis, some of the essential papers unpublished in Becker's lifetime. The range is great: from Female Delinquency to Jonestown. The depth is compelling. The critique of other thinkers in the field are incisive. And a final virtue: the style is clear, without the need for scholarly obfuscations."
