In 1980, BrIan Rose, in collaboration with Ed Fausty, photographed scenes from the Lower East Side with a 4x5 view camera. After the wrenching events of 9/11, Mr. Rose was drawn back to the sites of his original pictures. While keeping an eye on the 1980 photographs, he sought to rediscover his Lower East Side neighborhood with the perspective of time, change, and history. The resulting book, Time and Space on the Lower East Side, is a set of photographs that looks backward and forward, that posits the idea that places are not simply "then and now," but exist in a continuum of decay and rebirth.

FABnyc was founded in 2001 as the nonprofit leadership organization for the East 4th Street Cultural District, a historic and vibrant arts corridor in Manhattan between Second Avenue and Bowery. Now a neighborhood-wide coalition of arts and community groups, FABnyc drives community and economic development, while also preserving the Lower East Side's rich heritage and creative energy.
