Author Pens True Personal Story Set During World War II
The author's uncle, Arthur Dawson, became a prisoner of war on June 1, 1941, when he was captured by the Germans in the Battle of Crete. Welbourne was motivated to follow his uncle's wartime exploits and he particularly wanted to visit the village of the Greek Antoniadou family, who rescued his uncle following his first escape near Pefkodassos. Welbourne and his partner Avril Burley follow, as contained in this book, Arthur's wartime footsteps.
An excerpt from this book:
'The Germans put me on a train heading for Germany. We were jam-pocked together, herded like horses and cattle. The train was full of dysentery; just about everybody on board had it. Packed in as we were, with no toilets and no washing facilities, you can imagine how disgusting we were.'
The train chugs slowly north across the broad Macedonian plain and into the foothills of the Yugoslav border. At this point, Arthur finds an opportunity to escape ...'Some blokes managed to open a hole in the floor.
"Readers will enjoy the human interest story and hopefully will gain insight from the lessons of mankind's history. Human goodwill and peace makers are needed in order to overcome destructive greed and lust for power. We need to share and look after our planet."
