In Michele Lamar Richards's new fantasy novel, "The Mermuring Maiden: A Novel" (published by Archway Publishing), an African prince sires a child with a mermaid. The book is the beginning of the "Maiden" trilogy that exposes "the unnatural manipulation of all life on Earth."

When an African prince returns from university overseas he meets a sea goddess with whom he sires a child. The king demands his heir rear the bi-elemental girl, Miamshe, plus a nomad boy living alone in their village. Thus the prince sets out on a journey that splits apart the xenophobic villagers and the entire Mer-community.

Since Miamshe inspires fear in his traditional village, the medicine man takes the opportunity to reinstate himself as leader by summoning their first ancestor to assist him. But the primitive spirit wants war so all life forms on and within the earth return to their primordial existence. Will the prophecy of the bi-elemental child's ability to restore balance on the planet come to be or will the mutant gene replace the next generation?

"With xenophobia splitting the world apart and their being more wars and slavery today than during the Middle Passage, this innocent story is a clarion call to embrace the unknown and restore humanity to humans so we may rebuild the earth in alignment with all its beings," Richards says. "It encourages humanity to respect and love itself back to balance."
