Carolrhoda Lab, a division of Lerner Publishing Group, comes A Matter of Souls, a searing collection of short stories by Denise Lewis Patrick. From the shores of Africa to the bowels of a transatlantic ship to a voting booth in Mississippi to the jungles of Vietnam, all human connection is a matter of souls.

In her first work for young adults, Denise Lewis Patrick considers the souls of black men and women across centuries and continents. In each, she takes the measure of their dignity, describes their dreams, and catalogs their fears.

Patrick's use of the short story form, which is under-represented in YA literature despite being highly relevant to the current literary landscape, will appeal to young readers with its flexibility and contemporary feel.

By turns truthful yet magical, brutal yet hopeful, this collection is an important and accessible exploration of race that shares the history of the African-American experience over four centuries. Brutality, beauty, laughter, rage, and love all take their turns in each story, but the final impression is of indomitable, luminous, and connected souls.
