The Bushwick Starr partners with One Whale's Tale to present QUINCE, written and co-created by Camilo Quiroz-Vázquez and directed and co-created by Ellpetha Tsivicos. Originally presented as an abridged workshop at the People's Garden in 2020, QUINCE is the story of a 15 year-old Chicana confronting her queer identity, family and religion on the eve of her quinceañera. A quinceañera is a rite-of-passage ushering a girl's transition into womanhood, emphasizing the importance of family and community.

QUINCE will feature Sara Gutierrez, Brenda Flores, Jose Perez, Talisa Velázquez, Camilo Quiroz-Vázquez, and Ellpetha Tsivicos. In addition to Quiroz-Vázquez and Tsivicos, the QUINCE creative team includes Tanya Orellana (Scenic Design), Mextly Couzin (Lighting Design) and Scarlet Moreno (Costume Design).

This project was originally workshopped as part of the TEAM's Petri Project Series and further developed through a residency at The SHED.

A note on the project from The Bushwick Starr's Artistic Director:

"The Bushwick Starr is thrilled to be partnering with One Whale's Tale to present their show QUINCE to end our 2021-22 Season. One Whale's Tale has been making miraculous work during this impossibly difficult time of the pandemic, presenting performances in public streets and community gardens when we all weren't able to gather indoors. When the workshop of QUINCE (supported as a Petri Project by The TEAM) performed in The People's Garden in Bushwick in the summer of 2020 it was the first live performance to take place during the shut-down. It found a way to not only present theater safely, but also present it in an open and accessible space in the Bushwick community where QUINCE's themes are highly resonant. We couldn't be happier now to be using the Starr's new home on Eldert St. for the first time (in its pre-construction state) to support One Whale's Tale to bring this full production of QUINCE back to Bushwick in June. Serendipitously, the Starr is also celebrating its 15th Season and experiencing our own rite of passage as we look to a future in our new, permanent home.

We hope that our ground floor building with its front gate openly displaying the vibrant, colorful, world of QUINCE will continue the show's mission of accessibility, inclusion, celebration, and welcome and are so excited to be collaborating with artists who's care for community is integral to their work. " - Noel Allain, Artistic Director
