PRISCILLA GILMAN: THE ANTI-ROMANTIC CHILD, A STORY OF UNEXPECTED JOY
BOOK READING AND SIGNING

I would like to observe that it's hard to find books in this genre with ideas in them, and that's where The Anti-Romantic Child scores. It's not just about dealing with the tricky hand that the author has been dealt; this is also a book about literature, specifically Wordsworth and the Romantics, and how Gilman's literary heroes have both helped and hindered her understanding of what her child is and what she wanted him to be. It's smart, soulful, and involving." Nick Hornby

Priscilla Gilman had the greatest expectations for the birth of her first child. But her romantic vision would not be fulfilled in the ways she dreamed. Though Benjamin was an extraordinary child, the signs of his remarkable precocity were also manifestations of a developmental disorder called hyperlexia that would require intensive therapies and special schooling, and would dramatically alter the course Priscilla had imagined for her family. SEDF is delighted to welcome Ms. Gilman for this special Book Reading at the Spectrum Playhouse with a Book Signing/Reception to follow at the Good Purpose Gallery. Thanks to Main Street Books in Lee, Ms. Gilman's book will be for sale at the Gallery during the Signing.

A former professor of English at Yale and Vassar, with a background in the performing arts, Gilman is a captivating speaker whose warmth, dynamism, and accessibility make her highly sought-after by diverse audiences. She is a featured blogger on Huffington Post's Huff Post Parents Page and her writing has also been featured on the Daily Beast.

The Anti-Romantic Child was excerpted in Newsweek and featured on the cover of its international edition in April 2011. The book was recently named as one of 5 nominees in the category of Best First Book for a Books for a Better Life Award, sponsored by the National MS Society.
