(BOSTON) -GAN-e-meed Theatre Project opens its 2011-12 production season with the 1-Page Play Experiment, which encourages artists to fuse text, performance, and visual art to create a play on a single sheet of paper. Playwrights, artists, and collaborators are challenged to form works that can be both performed and viewed, and to explore how visual form and content complement one another.

Fifteen finalists will be chosen from the pieces submitted and will be showcased in the lobby of the Boston Playwrights' Theatre from December 1st through 4th in conjunction with Not A Box New Play Festival. All weekend long, audiences will be invited to vote for their favorite plays. The five pieces with the most votes will be fully mounted during GAN-e-meed Theatre Project's 2012-2013 season. The finalists will also be given a staged reading on December 3rd for voting audience members. Boston-area actors and directors will join in to bring the pieces to life.

Playwrights are invited to submit their 1-Page Plays using the theme of IDENTITY for consideration. Full guidelines and submission details are available at www.ganemeed.org.

"Last year's experiment was a thrilling success," says Executive Artistic Director SerahRose Roth. "Practically every audience member, during the run of Silence and the subsequent free staged readings of the finalists, took the time to read each play on display. They were as intrigued by the challenge as the artists." Ms. Roth is also hopeful that playwrights will fully explore the visual component of their work and even collaborate with other artists. "In an increasingly visual culture, it's interesting to see where art and the written word intersect with performance and where they enhance each other." The unique parameters of the 1-Page Play Experiment will challenge playwrights and encourage creativity, Ms. Roth believes.

"Ultimately, though, we want it to be fun and inspiring," she says. "Last year we had the privilege of bringing 7 female actors and 3 female directors together to create the staged readings. The talent and energy in the room was palpable. I also received notes from several participating playwrights that this project inspired them to enter other competitions, and write more in general. These are the greatest indicators of a successful artistic experiment: the audience is intrigued and stays for more; the artists are challenged, inspired, and joyful; and we all love it so much that we want to do it again. I can't wait to see what plays we get this year."
