Blue Spruce Theatre continues to build on last year's new interpretation of its mission, andhas chosen to support Human Rights First, a strong, international and non-partisan rightsadvocacy organization.Once on This Island uses the medium of Calypso-flavored music and dance to tell the storyof Ti Moune, a young peasant girl who dares to stand against the gods themselves as atestament to her love for a wealthy boy (a grand homme) from the other side of the island.Part Romeo and Juliet, part a retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid, thiscaptivating story about facing discrimination with unwavering resolve ties in beautifully toHuman Rights First's mission of standing up for human rights defenders around the world, and confronting those who would use violence to persecute others. Because equality is a cornerstone of human rights protection, discrimination in all its forms is a violation of humanrights.

Even today in the post-Civil Rights Era, many people in America are targeted with violenceand hatred for their different beliefs or ethnic background. We believe that this behavior is un-American. While Blue Spruce Theatre is not dedicated to any particular group, cause orpolitical platform, we do feel that fostering communication between people is essential to ourfuture. Therefore, we are dedicating this season to Human Rights First to support theircontinuing efforts to help fight discrimination and hate throughout the world. We will becollecting donations at the Box Office in their behalf, and we will also have brochures andother materials on-hand for those who would like to read more about their activities.Blue Spruce Theatre invites you to join them at the Arsenal Center for the Arts, in Watertown, MA, October 7-24, 2010, and as always thanks you for your support.
