re: African-America Phantom of The Opera?  Mar 20 2009, 11:42:11 PM
He sure was!

I was working at the Music Center at the time Guillaume was the Phantom. I saw his performance MANY MANY TIMES.

There was nothing inherently wrong with casting an African-American in the role... except for ONE thing... the white, lonely, romantically starved Phantom "Phans" had a VERY difficult time getting their "fix." They just didn't leave the theatre with the wet panties a white Phantom gave them. Pardon me for being so crude...but it is true.

I must say I find that to be one completely tacky painting.

It screams to be displayed next to a black velvet painting of Elvis or those dogs playing poker.

You could dress up like Jesus and sing PRACTICALLY PERFECT from MARY POPPINS.

Okay.. I'll stop.

Or.. you could sing YOU'VE GOT TO BE TAUGHT from SOUTH PACIFIC and tie it into the "homosexuals are an abomination" part of the scriptures.

ON THE S.S. BERNARD COHN from ON A CLEAR DAY...

Pretty silly number that could easily be cut, but I still like it.

re: Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf Original Cast Album Help  Jan 29 2009, 10:34:09 PM
I wish I could stand behind L.A. Theatre works, but their productions are SO uninspired. They use some of the dullest actors and tamper with the text too much.

I listen to them and buy their recordings because they are the only game in town. But they are so bland... and for the most part not very listener friendly. How many times have they NOT described where the scene is taking place? How many times have the tweaked the text to cover up a visual stage action? Leaving the listener

re: Man Smoking Bong on JERSEY BOYS Balcony  Jan 29 2009, 10:10:27 PM
I was at the revival of OH, KAY and the balcony was pretty empty. At one point I looked around and saw two guys "engaging"... SERIOUSLY!

Since the show was so bad and Gershwin doesn't inspire me to acts of sex in public, I left.

Truth to tell those two fella were probably the only ones truly enjoying themselves.

At one time I had

BOYS IN THE BAND

THE REAL THING

MA RAINY'S BLACK BOTTOM

DEATH OF SALESMAN

THE ZOO STORY

And a TONS of Cademon recordings of classic plays on LP.

JUNO AND THE PAY COCK

THE CHERRY ORCHARD w/ Jessica Tandy.

STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE w/ Rosemary Harris (I heard that is coming out on cd soon.

Tons more. There were lots of plays recorded to

re: Betty Buckley.  Jan 29 2009, 03:02:21 PM
I loved her Norma too. In fact, I found her to be the best and I saw all the major Normas.

What impressed me most was how she was always just a bit out of sync with the reality of the show. She was completely in her own world which added a tension that made the whole piece much more dramatic.

Her performance elevated the piece from a glitzy melodrama to a captivating psychological study.

Anyone remember the Bravo profile of Buckley when she talks about meditating and how the spirit of Norma Desmond erupted out of her?

For just a moment you glimpse Buckley's special brand of looney flash across her face.

I love actors!

re: Betty Buckley.  Jan 29 2009, 02:28:25 PM
I'm starting to think Marnorm is as nutty as Buckley.

re: Betty Buckley.  Jan 28 2009, 01:43:01 PM
once a month, ditto! ditto! ditto!

I meet her at a party once and found myself tongue tied too!

She is a tiny thing!

re: The perfect Cherry Jones role...  Jan 24 2009, 09:58:45 PM
She is one of those actresses who can't gloss over or act around a bad role.

I've seen her in two original plays that weren't very good and each time she came off mediorce.

But give her quality material and she SOARS!!!!

re: Christine Ebersole SNL Castmember  Jan 22 2009, 11:52:05 PM
True, I say it often because I remember a time when I had such strong opinions about things I couldn't possibly know anything about.

SNL is a topical show.. the times inform the comedy. So even if you happen to catch the episodes with Ebersole now... unless you watched them AT THE TIME you'll NEVER get the full impact of the cultural context..

I'm pretty sure the person whose post I commented on was too young to have watched the Ebersole season. If I'm wrong and

I have this image of a great-grandmother sitting around listening to her children and her children's children complain about how bad the current economy is.

Great-Granny sits silently and thinks to herself... "I've been through the DEPRESSION.. you youngin's don't know SH*T!"

re: Christine Ebersole SNL Castmember  Jan 22 2009, 04:17:01 PM
"Worse than its become now? The show hasn't been funny in years."

I wish I was young again when I knew everything.
