The very young Manon is preparing to enter the convent when, suddenly, she evades her mapped-out destiny in order to run off with the Chevalier des Grieux. However, refusing to live in poverty, she throws herself into the arms of a rich man, whose fortune she enjoys.

But her heart belongs to des Grieux, whom she cannot forget.

When she hears that he intends to withdraw from the world in order to become a priest, she makes another attempt to run off with him.

They both then attempt to win money by gambling.

Having struck lucky, they begin to lose and are accused of cheating.

While des Grieux escapes from prison thanks to his relations, Manon is condemned to a heavy punishment...
