At a time when demand for the West's natural resources is at an all-time high, and a changing climate is contributing to drought and its devastating consequences, it is critical to bring together those who depend on the land and those who are tasked with ensuring its sustainability, to share stories and solutions to the region's growing resource concerns. The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, which takes place in Elko, Nevada, January 28 to February 2, 2013, is a natural forum for discussions about these and other subjects pertinent to the rural West.

Three Cornish College of the Arts students have been chosen to participate in the 2013 Region 7 Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. Seniors Michael Feldman and Ben Wippel have been nominated for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship Auditions for their work on The Mystery of Edwin Drood last spring, and Shades of Blue, a 10-minute play by junior Leila Jacobson was accepted for a staged reading in the festival.

Composer/pianist Gregg Kallor will give a benefit concert on January 13, 2013, 7:30 p.m. at Culture Project Theater (45 Bleecker Street at Lafayette, New York City) to raise money for hurricane Sandy relief. Kallor, joined by guest musicians, will perform some of his latest music including "Short Stories" for violin and piano; the world premiere of Undercurrent, a new piece for cello and piano; and several pieces for piano, violin, cello, and clarinet. In addition, Kallor will perform excerpts from his nine-movement solo piano suite, "A Single Noon" - a musical tableau of life in New York City, told through composition and improvisation - that was premiered at Carnegie Hall in 2011.
