Everybody's been talking about the animatronic pig which cost a reported £100,000 for Cameron Mackintosh's new musical comedy BETTY BLUE EYES, based on the Handmade Film 'A PRIVATE FUNCTION' by Alan Bennett and Malcolm Mowbray. BETTY BLUE EYES is the first original musical Cameron Mackintosh has produced in ten years. It started previews at the Novello Theatre in the West End on 19 March and opened on 13 April. American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) adds an additional week of performances to its world premiere production of Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City, which continues to break sales records. The world premiere musical amassed the largest advance sale in A.C.T.'s history prior to its first preview performance on May 18 and continues to break sales records throughout its sold-out run. Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City will now run through July 31, 2011, at the American Conservatory Theater (415 Geary Street, San Francisco). The added performances are July 26-31, 2011: 8 p.m. performances Tuesday through Sunday and 2 p.m. matinees on July 30 and 31.

As previously reported, The Kennedy Center's all-new, critically-acclaimed production of James Goldman and Stephen Sondheim's Tony Award-winning musical FOLLIES will transfer to Broadway this summer. FOLLIES will play a limited engagement at the Marquis Theatre, with dates to be announced shortly. Rehearsals, it has just been revealed, will begin on August 7, 2011. While an official casting announcement is forthcoming, including a detail of those who will be transferring with the production, a casting notice out today indicates that the roles of Salange La Fitte (played in the Kennedy Center by Régine), Hattie Walker (Linda Lavin), and Theodore Whitman (Terrence Currier) are open. Linda Lavin's departure was reported last week upon the announcement that she would simultaneously be starring in THE LYONS at the Vineyard Theatre.

As previously reported, the Footloose remake, starring Julianne Hough and Kenny Wormald will be released in theaters on October 14, 2011. In the midst of finishing up Footloose and filming Rock of Ages in Miami, Julianne Hough found some time to support the American Humane Association at the VA Medical Center in Manhattan, giving a concert for patients with therapy dogs. While on hand, Hough helped launch the American Humane Association's voting campaign for the inaugural 'Hero Dog Awards.' CESAR Canine Cuisine will be making donations to the American Humane Association for each vote cast for a favorite dog hero at www.HeroDogAwards.org, helping to promote the use of therapy dogs to those in need. Hough spoke with Entertainment Tonight about the project, making sure to also reiterate how much fun the cast and crew are having in Miami on the ROCK OF AGES set.

Additional evening highlights included an exclusive sneak preview of Cirque du Soleil's first resident production in Los Angeles, IRIS - A Journey Through the World of Cinema, two-time Academy Award-winning actress Hilary Swank presenting the Hall of Fame award to Connick Jr., and a performance by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra led by Principal Guest Conductor Thomas Wilkins.

The concept of Ajax in Iraq by Ellen McLaughlin is one that instantly intrigues. Taking the classic Sophocles legend and drawing parallels to the war in Iraq certainly raises an eyebrow or two. That being said, even though I am sure this play is an engaging read, when put into the hands of the masterful Flux Theatre Ensemble it becomes all encompassing. Flux has chosen to call it's current season of theatre 'Don't Look Away' and this very accurately describes the inner monologue of the audience at this fascinating production. It's rare to have an experience at the theatre that won't let you go, but this is one of those occasions.

Yesterday, June 16, Sarah Palin appeared on Fox's Hannity talk show with Sean Hannity. In addition to the general Democrat-bashing, among the topics of discussion were unions, health care, her feelings on Julianne Moore portraying her in an upcoming HBO movie and her views on goverment programs, including The National Endowment for the Arts. Never one to white wash her views, the half-term Alaskan Governor and former VP candidate was clear in her disdain for the arts support organization, saying: 'NPR, National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, all those kind of frivolous things that government shouldn't be in the business of funding with tax dollars -- those should all be on the chopping block as we talk about the $14 trillion debt that we're going to hand to our kids and our grandkids. Yes, those are the type of things that for more than one reason need to be cut.'
