Review: 'When Tang Met Laika'January 30, 2010When Tang Met Laika had it's world premiere at the Denver Center on January 28th. Regelio Martinez's play is about an astronaut who falls in love with a female cosmonaut around the time of the Columbia Shuttle disaster. But that is only part of the play. Intertwined is the relationship between the United States and Russia, a marriage that is, or has been, going bad and ghosts from the past.
REVIEW: Little House on the Prairie settles into DenverDecember 17, 2009'Little House on the Prairie - The Musical', based on the 'Little House' books by Laura Ingalls Wilder and starring Melissa Gilbert as 'Ma', opened quietly at the Buell Theater on Tuesday night. Oh yes, there were commercials and talk of the show. But the show itself is a very low key affair. And that's not a bad thing. There are no chandeliers, bubbles or 'flying green witches' and that is what may upset some theatergoers. What theatergoers will like is that Melissa Gilbert, the original Laura Ingalls from the 70's TV series, plays 'Ma' in this musical production.
Denver's 'Guilty Ones' talk 'Spring Awakening'December 1, 2009On Wednesday June 26th, 2006, my best friend and I walked into the Atlantic Theatre Company to see the, then, Off-Broadway show 'Spring Awakening'. The theater was small and there was an electric feeling in the air. We were familiar with the show's composer Duncan Shiek's music so we got the last 2 tickets available. What exploded from the stage that evening left us breathless. We chatted with Steven Sater during intermission and he said that they had just found out that the show was moving but they didn't know where. Well, where was to Broadway! And after a successful run and 8 Tony Awards (Including Best Musical), Spring Awakening hits Denver on December 1st.
