ANTIGONE Comes To Burgtheater Wien From 6/19

By: Jun. 14, 2018

ANTIGONE Comes To Burgtheater Wien From 6/19 ImageThe classic play ANTIGONE will run at the Burgtheater Wien from June 19 to June 25.

The sons of Oedipus, Eteocles and Polyneikes, are dead, killed in the war over Thebes. While the new old ruler Creylon Eteocles is buried, he denies Polyneikes, whom he considers an enemy of the state, a funeral. His sister Antigone rebels against this funeral ban: sibling love and Staatsraison are irreconcilable. Although Haimon, Antigone's fiancé and Creon's son, ask for their release, the king has Antigone walled alive in a rock. But the gods of the dead revenge themselves: as prophesied by the blind seer Tiresias, evil takes its course.

ANTIGONE was likely written around 442 BC by Sophocles as he struggled with revolt against state power. There are free school workshops for this production of ANTIGONE.
