Cooee Cabaret is an original family cabaret show that weaves together iconic Australian songs and sound recordings, drawn from the NFSA’s Sounds of Australia registry. Created by contemporary musical director and cabaret performer Nigel Ubrihien, Cooee takes audiences from the earliest recordings of Indigenous language in the late 1890s, through well-loved advertising jingles and radio broadcasts, to popular contemporary music.
Cooee Cabaret will delight both young and old as as they discover more about these unique songs and sounds... with the help of three mischievous and engaging characters, played by Nigel and talented young character actors, Stephen Anderson and Guy Simon.
Recordings featured in the show include the Vegemite and Aeroplane Jelly jingles, country larrikins Dad and Dave, Slim Dusty’s Pub With No Beer, Dorothea Mackellar’s ode to outback Australia My Country, The Road to Gundagai and Waltzing Matilda, and pop classics I Am Woman, I Should Be So Lucky, Down Under and Indigenous protest song Treaty.
