Theatre: Straightjacket Productions' Men didn't miss a beat - the show went up a little late waiting for the storm battered audience to arrive. They were rewarded with complimentary drinks from Poverty Hill winery, one of the production sponsors.

Audiences have been powerfully affected by the performances in Men, by Sydney playwright/actor/director Brendan Cowell. It's a dark insight into the world of the contemporary young male, with strong performances from Samuel Johnson, Justin Rosniak and Jay Bowen, while Georgia Bolton holds her own in outstanding fashion. The season ends on March 21, (March 12 & 16 sold out)

Mary Edquist's substantial solo show, fills both galleries with evocative paintings, mixed media and works on paper. Following a group show here two years ago, Edquist has been painting with huge energy and freedom.

 

Playreading: Chipper
Nic Velissaris
Tuesday 23 March, 8pm

A rehearsed reading of Chipper by Nic Velissaris, whose earlier play Brother Boy first brought this talented writer to wide attention. The fish and chip shop has been a traditional starting point for migrants from so many countries, and Nic brilliantly captures the struggles and the tensions of the migrant experience.

This is the second presentation of Chipper, directed by Peta Hanrahan, and it has been funded by the Malcolm Robertson Foundation.

Music: Is this what you believe?
Wednesday 24 March, 7.30pm

Contemporary composer and double bass player Nick Tsiavos returns with the first of two recitals of new works featuring Adam Simmons (clarinet), percussionists Eugene Ughetti and Peter Neville, and soprano Deborah Kayser. From past experience we know this will be an evening of amazing music making, in Nick's words "a search for transcendent beauty within the grit and dissonance of modern art music."

Classical Concert: Haydn the Bold, Haydn the Beautiful
Ironwood
Thursday 25 March, 7.30pm

The early music specialist quartet, Ironwood will take us back to the eighteenth century with the gorgeous textures and warm sounds of gut stringed instruments. Their programme also includes a beautful small work by Boccherini, and a world premiere by Australian composer Damian Barbeier.

In Vestiges photographer Jo Daniell explores the timelessness of the Outback landscape, looking at the tiny marks that paradoxically convey so much information. Sometimes optically puzzling, always subtle, Daniell's photographs convey a deep awareness and understanding of nature and art.

World's End Barbeque
16 - 27 March

Nature also plays a major role in World's End Barbeque, an exhibition of paintings by Robyn Base. Referencing Douglas Adams' book The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, the polar regions are presented as an improbable setting for an "Aussie" barbecue.
