fortyfivedownstairs announces their upcoming events and shows including a dozen of Melbourne's clever creatives blurring the boundaries between artist and audience in Arts Spring Clean. There is also a call for entries for the Victorian Indigenous Art Awards 2012.

Large Gallery: Jo Daniell

Melting
Until Saturday 17 September

In his second exhibition at fortyfivedownstairs, Jo Daniell continues his deep and powerful involvement with the natural world. Melting documents a recent expedition to Antarctica, and the resulting exhibition is an extraordinarily beautiful experience. This is not a frozen white expanse, but a series of captivating sculptural images, in cerulean blues of almost unbelievable intensity.

Small Gallery: Pam Bain
Mapology Melbourne
Until Saturday 17 September

Pam Bain reconfigures the map of Melbourne and its suburbs in these paintings and works on paper. This is not only a playful experiment to transform the current map of Melbourne, but a method that the artist has developed to re-orientate herself in a new city. The grids of the maps we are so familiar with are transformed into colourful interlocking patterned shapes, each with decipherable individual identities.

Theatre : The Dollhouse
Two weeks only, 14 - 25 September

Daniel Schlusser's adaptation of the Norwegian writer Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House opens almost exactly 132 years after its premiere in Copenhagen. It is one of the great classic setpieces of Western drama, with its sharply critical attitude towards 19th century marriage, which created a storm of controversy at the time, and for years afterwards.

This is a return to the production Daniel created four years ago, transposing the play to the contemporary aspirational professional class. It was described by writer and theatre critic Alison Croggan as "...an intelligent look at a classic play that shows it to be as sharp as ever in cutting through the superficialities and deceits of contemporary mores." We are looking forward to even more discussion and debate!

Another triumph for Patricia Cornelius and Do not go gentle...

Last week a group from fortyfivedownstairs was thrilled to accompany Patricia to the Victorian Premier's Literary Awards, when she was announced the winner of the Drama Award. I think we all cried.

A wonderful reward for this magnificent play, which was presented by fortyfivedownstairs last year, with a brilliant cast, directed by Julian Meyrick.

So far, Patricia has been awarded the PatRick White Award for Drama, the NSW Premier's Literary Award, and now Victoria. Those of you who saw this very beautiful play are part of an extremely exclusive group - but we really hope that the major companies will take another look at this outstanding play. Incidentally, Do not go gentle... is also shortlisted for the Awgies (Australian Writers' Guild) and the W.A Premier's Literary Award... Fingers crossed!
