Victorian Avant-Garde Artists Society Presents: At Melbourne International Comedy Festival

By: Mar. 01, 2018

Victorian Avant-Garde Artists Society Presents: At Melbourne International Comedy Festival ImageSix of Melbourne's best improvisers will create a completely unique and utterly absurd parody of "cutting-edge" theatre. Comedy, tragedy, Dada, Brecht and Beckett collide in a one-off theatrical masterpiece never before seen and never to be seen again.

Each night the audience suggests a title for the newest company performance and VAGAS will devise, on the spot, a 50-minute experimental theatre piece. Filled with movement, colourful characters and unbridled imagination, their performance will challenge conceptions of what comedy and theatre should be.

This parody of theatre and art tropes will appeal to anyone who enjoys cringeworthy mockumentaries like The Office, sketch shows like The Characters, anything by Christopher Guest and to anyone who loves theatre.

The Victorian Avant-garde Artists' Society perform a monthly show at The Improv Conspiracy, Melbourne's leading long-form improv comedy theatre. The cast is made up of a mixture of comedians, actors, writers and filmmakers who are intentionally subverting their own passions for this show. Roxanne Halley, VAGAS producer and filmmaker said; "We're essentially taking the piss out of theatre and art that takes itself too seriously. Ironically, we're all practicing artists. We've all had loads of experience improvising comedy, but have collectively agreed that this show is the most creative project we've ever worked on".

Victorian Avant-garde Artists Society presents opens on Tuesday 27 March at Tasma Terrace and runs for two weeks. Bookings recommended.

Cost: $18 - $25
