A trio of politically charged monologues comes to Australia at the end of the month, appearing in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra. Award-winning British actor and playwright Pip Utton will be touring three dramas, each of which illustrates one of history's most notorious leaders.

Utton's one-man-performances offer theatrical portraits of German dictator Adolf Hitler and British prime ministers Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher. Each show in the series offers insights into the minds of these historical figures.

In Playing Maggie, Utton steps out as the Iron Lady, opening the stage up to audience questions, answering them unswervingly in character as Margaret Thatcher. Old emotions and fascinating discoveries rise quickly to the surface.

In Adolf, Utton transforms into the tyrant in the hours leading up to his suicide. This is the play that early on caused riots in the Jewish community - followed by huge acclaim as it was realised just how pertinent Hitler's legacy is today, and how dangerous.

In Churchill, Utton brings the great statesman to life in a flight of whimsy, transporting the audience to London to enjoy the three things that Winston loved most - hearing himself talk, a glass of Scotch and a cigar.

Given today's political climate, there's no better time to look back at history's leaders - both good and bad - and to see which of their legacies live on, and how.
